Description
JUNTOS is a New York design studio that creates furniture and objects made to bring people together. Our designs flaunt a sensual approach to color and blend expressive forms with functionality. The name of our studio comes from the Spanish word for together. Each piece is designed to hold space for self-expression, relaxation and play, enriching the spirit of the place we call home.
Recognizing the changing needs and evolving lifestyles of every home, we wanted to create a lifelong solution to personal storage that was both beautiful and functional. A system that was capable of providing maximum storage and artful display.
Mortise shelving system is an adaptable solution, capable of extending and contracting thanks to a smart modular design. It combines the versatility of a flat pack structure with the durability of solid hardwood construction. Its three distinct modular elements and demountable hardware create a system that meets people where they are. The design details highlight rather than conceal a collapsible yet stable structure, its aesthetically pleasing rounded corners draw attention to the joints and emphasize the simplicity of the whole. Named after its feature mortise and tenon joints, the system facilitates the addition or subtraction of varying bay widths to transform into multiple configurations that serve everyday life. The structure comes together with the help of a humble handheld screwdriver, allowing bays to be removed or added as needed.
Mortise is made with hard maple ethically sourced in the northeast of the United States. Our goal was to use sustainable sourced materials and local manufacturing to create a high-quality modular storage system. Maple is readily available in the Northeast and has been grown sustainably for generations, this material was chosen after engaging with local foresters, wood mills, and furniture makers to better understand the process from start to finish. The shelving system is made in Lewiston, Maine, an area that was once a bustling furniture manufacturing town. We are proud to partner with a young, small manufacturing company that is dedicated to bringing back the craft of fine furniture making to this storied place.
The Mortise shelving system was designed to fit every home: it can serve as a bookshelf, console table, credenza and more. Its generous dimensions maximize storage, shelves are deep enough to fit oversized art books and tall enough to comfortably hold a record collection. The functionality and simplicity of the piece is enhanced with three exclusive bold color stains that let the wood grain shine through: a light green called Lichen, a deep purple called Tinto and a dark blue called Tide. These wood stains were carefully developed to enhance the natural grain while providing a pop of color that is both magnetic yet subtle enough to be a “neutral” capable of being paired with different aesthetics.
