Description
The Path Chair, designed by Todd Bracher in collaboration with Humanscale, is a testament to the fusion of sustainability and comfort. Made globally available in February 2023 after a U.S. launch the previous year, Path incorporates nearly 22 pounds of recycled material, and channels harmful ocean waste into utility. It integrates 9.5 pounds of ocean-bound waste per chair, including 6.24 pounds of reclaimed fishing nets, the most harmful form of marine pollution, and 3.25 pounds of recycled plastics such as yogurt cups. Remarkably, 52% of its composition derives from recycled content, heralding a new standard in the use of upcycled material. The chair's design features the patented Gravity Mechanism™, which eliminates the need for bulky levers or knobs by utilizing the sitter's weight to provide personalized support and comfort. The unique FormSense Eco Knit™ further enhances comfort, turning potential waste into a valuable resource.
Furthermore, the Path Chair safeguards human and environmental health by remaining free from hazardous Red List Chemicals. Available in options such as anti-microbial Lotus fabric and chrome-free leathers, the Path Chair not only exemplifies Humanscale's commitment to a healthier planet but also redefines the possibilities of eco-conscious design. Path's design features high durability, ensuring it remains functional and comfortable for over a decade of heavy use. This longevity contributes to reduced consumption rates and waste production, emphasizing our dedication to sustainable living.
Contrary to the prevalent approach of buying carbon credits to achieve net neutrality, our strategy is fundamentally different. We've ensured Path's net positive status through a conscious, holistic design process. By integrating upcycled and ocean-reclaimed materials into our product, we've ensured that our carbon offset is intrinsic to our manufacturing process, not an external addition. This makes the Path chair a truly climate positive product that gives back more to the planet each time it's made. In the Path chair, the narrative of design and impact converges. The story is one of transformation – of ocean-bound waste into functional components, of the discarded into the desirable. It's about a chair that stands for more than just seating – it symbolizes our commitment to the planet, to sustainability, and to a healthier future for all.
"All of our chairs are climate positive, but we wanted Path to go to a whole new level." - Bob King, Founder & CEO, Humanscale.
"Every time a Path chair is manufactured, Humanscale has made a commitment that leaves the world better off in a measurable way. Path is climate positive, energy positive, water positive, and toxin-free. We’re showing it can be done.” - Jane Abernethy, Chief Sustainability Officer, Humanscale.
