Description
Inspired by the beauty of geometry, Bao brings together form and function to create a moveable pouf that is incredibly welcoming and emotive. The collection is available in six base archetypes—small, medium, large half-round, stacking, low loop handle and high loop handle—and two seat heights (lounge and work) to activate any space with its versatility. Constructed to embody the experience of a lounge chair, Bao retains its playful and collaborative spirit while serving as a space-saving and stylish seating companion for lively conversations, professional and private settings.
Bao is a collection of smart, effortlessly mobile poufs that aim to be an ode to all things precious. It was conceived to bridge the gap between formal and informal, sedate and lively and offers a seating solution like no other. With close attention to user experience and comfort, each versatile piece works as a standalone or within any arrangement. Alda Ly Architecture’s ethos of inspired collaboration and design-thinking is apparent in this first furniture collaboration between the AAPI women-owned firm and HBF.
The multiple meanings of the word Bao include expressions of preciousness and playfulness, and ALA designed a pouf that exudes both. There is practicality in the handles, mobility with the loop back, and stackability; but also whimsy and approachability in its soft, round shape and variety of upholstery options and finishes. ALA enjoyed creating something that they hope is like nothing else in the market - flexible and functional, but also fun.
Bao fulfills the need for light weight, versatile seating in evolving, transitional spaces and is still constructed to embody the experience of a lounge chair with dual-density cut-foam cushion and webbing to provide support for maximum comfort. The stackable feature is ideal for a space-saving solution that adds an extra aesthetic element to a space. The seat handle is made from one solid wood piece that has been specially steam bent with 5-axis machining and the height of the back loops were obsessively studied, designed, and fabricated for optimal user experience. The fabrication of cantilever legs—in which the leg is placed outside the piece rather than inside it—is unique to the design. This detail emphasizes the wood used in the piece and creates a new form that is both stable and aesthetically pleasing.
Beyond the thoughtful design elements, ALA and HBF have incorporated a variety of upholstery options and finishes into the collection for simple customization. Bao offers a wide range of hospitality-inspired HBF Textiles as graded-in standards. With an extensive selection of fully bleach-cleanable woven textiles, performance coated fabrics, and luxurious full-grain leathers, Bao enables designers to easily imprint their own creative vision, providing long-term value through refined aesthetics balanced with maximum durability. Additional elements such as a concentric quilted seat top, a signature seam stitch and a protective metal cap on the stacking model are like jewelry or an accessory - an extra touch that the specifier can use to distinguish and customize their pieces to suit each project.
