The Totem Series hearkens back to early American modernism and the era’s spirit of travel, leisure, growth, and innovation. Characterized by rich metals, intelligent engineering, and designs from the 1950’s, Doyle Crosby’s Totem evokes our past, present and future.
The pendants are constructed of rich metal, finished with fine gold leafing, and engineered with energy efficient lighting technology to make it both decorative and utilitarian. The series includes single-stem pendants and multi-stem pendants which are ideal for residential, hospitality and commercial spaces.
“When Jay asked me to design a fixture that would call to mind the designs of the 50’s and 60’s, my approach was to immerse myself in the art and design of the period,” said Boyd Lighting Director of Design Doyle Crosby. “I explored Populuxe/Googie/Doo Wop art, architecture, and design. I looked at a lot of motel and bowling alley signs, textile patterns, architectural elements, cars and electric guitars. While I was researching, I zeroed in on essential elements that attracted me on a visceral level. That’s where the trapezoids and the ovals started speaking to me as symbols for the era.”
Featuring oval and trapezoid cast metal forms threaded onto a vertical stem, the Totem fixtures are available in a soft satin black called Coal or a soft satin white called Cloud. Beautiful 12k white gold leaf or 22k yellow gold leaf is applied to the interior of the cast forms. (Fixtures also available in all white.)
Suspended at the center of each cast form is an illuminated acrylic orb house within a steel ring. Innovative engineering conceals two, small LED lamps in each orb, which are placed back-to-back for 360° illumination. With a 170-lumen output and only consuming 2.4 watts of power per orb, the fixtures are bright yet energy efficient. The pendants are fully dimmable with a 0-10v, four wire dimming system.
Totem can be composed of all oval cast forms, all trapezoid cast forms, or a mix of both. By increasing the quantity of cast forms (3, 5 or 7 standard) on each stem, one can increase the HOA of any pendant. Multi-stem pendants are available with a round or linear canopy. By increasing the number of stems (3 or 5 standard), one can increase the diameter of the Totem Round and increase the length of the Totem Linear.
The orbs stay stationary while the cast forms rotate around them.
“I truly love the design and execution of the Totem series by Doyle Crosby for Boyd,” said Boyd Lighting CEO Jay Sweet. “This family is an incredible blend of sophisticated, solid-state lighting (LED) and modern design. the Totem is a casually elegant fixture, destined for an array of interior environments; modern and transitional.”
