Product > acoustical applications
Fractals are the building block of many of nature’s patterns and have been scientifically proven to activate a stress-relieving response, nurture a sense of calmness and improve concentration. The visual patterns, triggering those remarkable effects, are the basis for CALM COLLECTION, an acoustic ceiling and wall tile system, designed by 13&9 Design and Fractals Research for FACT Design. By combining natural fractal patterns with optimized acoustics, the CALM COLLECTION helps to actively support health and well-being in the built environment.
Today’s continuous exposure to technology impacts how we live, work and interact, and poses many challenges on physical, cognitive and psychological levels. Based on their transdisciplinary approach to design, Martin and Anastasija Lesjak of 13&9 work holistically to create environments that balance people-place-technology, pursuing design strategies that are based on scientific analyses of stress-reduction concepts. One of their main areas of focus concerns research into perception and the effects of specific patterns that occur in nature. From this pursuit came 13&9’s partnership, known as ScienceDesignLab, with one of the leading scientists in this field, Professor Richard Taylor from the University of Oregon and Fractals Research Laboratory. The inter-disciplinary team of scientists in Eugene and designers in Graz, operates a purpose-developed software to “grow” patterns, mimicking the human eye movements that takes place when people are exposed to natural scenery. These movements are much like the trajectories of foraging birds. Much like a bird dropping a seed whenever it lands, the seeds then grew into fractal formations at the locations between the flight trajectories. Using specific scientific parameters, the team grew mid-complexity fractals that indicate a stress reduction of 60%.
The design of the 23.75” x 23.75” acoustic tile collection is centered on the fact that natural scenes display “fractal composites” whereby individual fractal objects - resembling waves, clouds, branches - visually merge to form the overall fractal pattern. Style BRANCHES employs a three-part line seed that is repeated, re-scaled, and rearranged with scientific precision, prompting the same eye movements as a canopy of crisscrossing branches. The CLOUDS pattern repeat, built from a square seed, triggers the image of drifting clusters of clouds, while WAVES tile, based on a line-shaped seed, recalls the quiet glimmer of a watery surface.
With a holistic approach to efficient manufacturing, packaging, and the product design itself, FACT is able to offer not just a more environmentally friendly acoustic solution, but also an affordable one. The tiles are produced in Tennessee, USA from PET felt that contains 60% pre-consumer recycled content. All FACT products hold “Declare™ Red List Free certification” and the firm is corporate member of the International Living Future Institute (ILFI).
