Description
Ocean rug Design is the result of a collaboration between established British rug company Riviere and award winning interior designer and architect Duo Anna Agapova and Oleg Klodt by O&A London. The design is part of the handcrafted CALEDONIA rugs collection, inspired by the majestic landscape of the Scottish Highlands and reflecting a deep and intimate sense of beauty that the two designers experienced on their first visit to the region.
The Design process required hundreds of hours to perfect the most intricate details of the pattern. We worked closely with both Anna and Oleg in order to materialise their true vision, a number of rendered sketches were produced before the final version was approved. The Design is highly complex, minimum of 18 colours were needed to achieve the level of detail and accuracy required.
Materials were carefully selected with the ecological impact in mind. In a world increasingly dominated by synthetic materials which are not readily biodegradable, we choose natural fibres such as wool sourced from the sheep reared in the Himalayas. Wool is highly eco-friendly, it’s 100% sustainable and renewable, with very little environmental impact throughout the production process. We are always exploring and sourcing materials with low impact on the environment and positive to human health. We decided to pair Tibetan wool with Tencel silk, an ecological fibre derived from wood pulp* that looks and feels like real silk. Harvested from certified and controlled sources the pulp is transformed into cellulosic fibres with high resource efficiency and low ecological impact. The water and by-products used to produce the fibres are recycled up to 99% reducing waste and environmental impact. (*from fast growing, low Eucalyptus bark, sustainably sourced and endlessly renewable. )
The contrast of these two materials enhance the fluidity and movement of its pattern reminiscent of the trails left by receding waves upon the wet sand. The sea foam silk textures refracts the light to mimic unpredictable oceans tides: like waves beating against a cliff capable of shaping different forms and patterns.
The Ocean design calls for Riviere’s most highly skilled artisan weavers due to the sheer design complexity and intricacy, calling for the change of yarn colour every few knots long requiring meticulous precision.
We strongly believe that the colours, textures and materials that we choose to decorate our homes can have a big impact on how we feel, enriching our home and supporting wellbeing, in particular, materials inspired by nature. This is the defining element of our rugs, they are pieces created of the highest quality that offer longevity, that will evolve with the clients’ home and lifestyle to one day become ‘antiques of the future’. Riviere’s rugs are pieces to cherish and hopefully pass to one generation to another.
Ocean can be customised in any shape, size and colour.
We cannot ignore the plastic crisis that our oceans are facing worldwide. With this in mind we've pledged to contribute 10% of every sale of this design to the charity 4Ocean.
